Stammersdorf

History & character

From Slavic Settlement to Wine Region

Stammersdorf is a settlement first mentioned in 1150, likely established around 1100. Originally, the place was known as Stenmarsdorf or Stamleinsdorf. The name derives from the Slavic personal name Stojmir. The village has a linear village green character, with the church, one of the old Lower Austrian fortified churches, surrounded by closed rows of houses. Throughout history, Stammersdorf has often been the target of wars and destruction, including attacks by Hungarians, Turks, and French. Despite all these adversities, the village has managed to maintain its rural character to this day. In the 19th century, Stammersdorf was better connected to Vienna through the steam tramway company. Today, Stammersdorf is known for its vineyards, with around 230 hectares of vineyards and numerous heurigen that serve as popular excursion destinations.
