History & character
From Chalbsberger to modern district
The history of Kalksburg dates back to 1188 when the family of Chalbsberger was first documented. Over the centuries, the place, which was also known as Kalbsberg and Kalksdorf at times, developed. Kalksburg was an independent municipality until 1938 and then became part of the 23rd district of Liesing in Vienna. The area was historically shaped by forestry but underwent a transformation in the 19th century due to tourism. The destruction of Kalksburg Castle in 1463 and the severe damage during the Second Turkish Siege of Vienna in 1683 marked the history of the place. Franz von Mack, a benefactor in the 18th century, had several significant buildings erected there, including the parish church "St. Peter in Chains". Today, Kalksburg is a quiet, green district characterized by its proximity to the Wienerwald and the Föhrenberge Nature Park. About 2000 people live here, and the area offers a harmonious blend of rural charm and urban connectivity.
