Neu-Erlaa

History & character

From Agriculture to Urban Community

Neu-Erlaa, formerly part of the independent municipality of Erlaa, was first documented in 1114. The area grew slowly and was strongly influenced by agriculture. In 1835, the districts of Alt-Erlaa and Neu-Erlaa were mentioned, which today have merged again. In 1938, Erlaa became part of the 23rd district during the incorporation into 'Greater Vienna.' After World War II, Erlaa remained with Vienna while other places were reallocated to Lower Austria. Today, Neu-Erlaa is an increasingly urbanized district with around 15,000 inhabitants. A notable event in recent history was the explosion of an aerial bomb in 2008, which drew attention and reminded residents of the area's past.
