History & character
From Agriculture to Residential Area
Siebenhirten, once a Lower Austrian municipality, became part of Vienna in 1938 and today belongs to the 23rd district, Liesing. The name derives from Subinhirten, and the first documented mention dates back to around 1140/50. In earlier times, the population was primarily engaged in grain cultivation, while viticulture played a minor role. In the 19th century, some factories were established, but agriculture remained dominant. After the annexation in 1938, Siebenhirten was integrated into the Viennese district and experienced air raids during World War II, which notably affected the Martinskirche. Following the Allied occupation of Vienna in 1945, Siebenhirten was part of the Soviet occupation zone but remained with Vienna and became part of the new 23rd district. Today, around 8000 people live in Siebenhirten, which has transformed from an agricultural community to an urban residential area.
