History & character
From Winegrowing to the Garden City of Maria Enzersdorf
Maria Enzersdorf, a market town located along the Thermenlinie in the Lower Austrian industrial region, has a long history closely tied to viticulture. Early settlements can be traced back to the Celts and Romans. The first documented mention of the place was around 1130 as 'Engelschalkesdorf'. Over the centuries, Maria Enzersdorf has undergone various developments, including the construction of Burg Liechtenstein and several monastery foundations. A significant milestone was the establishment of the Südstadt in the 1960s, designed as a garden city, which doubled the population within a decade. Today, the community is characterized by a blend of urban and nature-oriented areas, with some green spaces preserved despite development pressures. This combination of history, nature, and modern living makes Maria Enzersdorf an attractive place for future residents.
