History & character
From Roman Past to Modern Community
Guntramsdorf has a long history that dates back to the Roman province of Pannonia. Finds from the La Tène period and a burial site attest to early settlement. The name Guntramsdorf suggests a possible founder named Guntram, whose history reaches back to the 9th century. Over the centuries, the area belonged to various rulers, including the Dukes of Mödling and the knightly family of Guntramsdorf. In the Middle Ages, an artificial fish pond was significant, with its yield supporting a part of the budget of the then local ruler.
Today, Guntramsdorf is a market community with 9,441 inhabitants located in the industrial quarter of Lower Austria. The development in the 20th century significantly shaped the area, especially through residential construction that began after the annexation of Austria in 1938. The Neu-Guntramsdorf settlement emerged and was promoted as a modern housing form for workers. The character of the place combines historical elements with a constantly evolving community that reflects both rural and urban influences.
