Pöstlingberg

History & character

From Pilgrimage Site to Upscale Residential Area

Pöstlingberg, a 539 m high mountain above the left bank of the Danube in Linz, has a rich history dating back to 1716. At that time, the mountain became a pilgrimage site when a Pietà was placed at the weather cross. The Pöstlingberg Church, one of Upper Austria's most famous landmarks, was consecrated in 1748 and developed over the centuries into a popular destination for pilgrims and excursionists. The military significance of Pöstlingberg began in 1809 when the French established fortifications there, which opened up the view of the city of Linz and made the mountain an attractive excursion destination. The opening of the Pöstlingbergbahn in 1898 and the creation of walking paths contributed to the tourist development of the area. Today, Pöstlingberg is an upscale residential area of Linz, attracting numerous visitors with its baroque pilgrimage church, the Grottenbahn, and the observation platform overlooking the city. The combination of nature, history, and the tranquil residential atmosphere makes Pöstlingberg a unique place in Linz.

Real building heights (OpenStreetMap footprints with heights from the BEV laser scan), sun hours and shadows from sun position and geometry. How much of it reaches you also depends on orientation and windows. Terrain is included, from the official elevation model out to 12 km: a mountain to the south takes the winter sun just as the house opposite does. Where the sun only grazes a ridge, the figure remains an approximation.
