History & character
From the Ferry to the City of Urfahr
Urfahr is a district of Linz located north of the Danube. The name Urfahr derives from the word Überfahrt, referring to the historical necessity of crossing the Danube to transport salt from Linz to Bohemia. Urfahr is mentioned in Linz documents from 1288, with the first undisputed mention as a settlement on the left bank of the Danube occurring in 1360. In 1808, Urfahr was granted market rights, leading to the approval of the Urfahr Market in 1817. In 1882, Urfahr was elevated to city status and remained an independent municipality until its incorporation into Linz in 1919.
Today, Urfahr is characterized by a blend of urban life and natural areas. The surroundings feature a diverse infrastructure and offer both cultural events and recreational opportunities. The proximity to the Danube and the historical development give Urfahr a unique character that combines both tradition and modernity.
