History & character

From Farmstead to Residential Area

Spallerhof is a district in Linz, named after the former farmstead Spallerhof. From 1938 onwards, the area began to be densely populated as housing was needed for settlers from St. Peter and workers in the steel industry. For this purpose, the housing stock company (WAG) was established to oversee the planning and construction of residential buildings. These were designed by architect Herbert Rimpl in the Heimat style of the Stuttgart School. For many new residents, moving here represented an improvement in quality of life, as the apartments featured private toilets and bathrooms. In 2014, Spallerhof was formed through the merger of several statistical districts and today presents itself as a quiet district in the southern part of Linz.

Real building heights (OpenStreetMap footprints with heights from the BEV laser scan), sun hours and shadows from sun position and geometry. How much of it reaches you also depends on orientation and windows. Terrain is included, from the official elevation model out to 12 km: a mountain to the south takes the winter sun just as the house opposite does. Where the sun only grazes a ridge, the figure remains an approximation.
