Purkersdorf

History & character

From Forest Settlement to Modern Community

Purkersdorf, a municipality in the Wienerwald region, was founded around the year 1000 as a forest settlement and was first mentioned in documents in 1133. The name originates from a landowner named Albero de Purchartesdorf. The Babenbergers designated the Wienerwald, including Purkersdorf, as a hunting reserve exclusively for the chosen few. Over the centuries, the area changed hands multiple times until it was sold to the Habsburgs in 1333. Its location on the imperial road, following the historical Roman route, made Purkersdorf an important stopover point. The municipality became an independent community in 1849 and was connected to the modern transport network through the Kaiserin-Elisabeth-Bahn between 1856 and 1858.

Today, Purkersdorf is a vibrant town with 9931 residents, extending along the Wien River. The surroundings are characterized by gentle hills, and the community offers a peaceful living atmosphere in close proximity to Vienna. The historic buildings, such as the early classicist post office, and the beautiful nature make Purkersdorf an appealing place to live.
