History & character
From Karlistetin to Karlstetten
Karlstetten was first mentioned in a document as Karlistetin in 1072. Over the centuries, the municipality served various rulers, including the Counts of Peilstein and the Zinzendorfs, who held local sovereignty until 1813. The historical castle, with origins in the Middle Ages, has been heavily damaged over time and today hardly resembles its former splendor. In 1965, the castle came into the possession of the municipality. In 1968, the two cadastral municipalities of Untermamau and Obermamau were incorporated into the market community.
Today, Karlstetten is a quiet market community in the Mostviertel, characterized by its diverse landscapes. Located on the southeastern edge of the Dunkelsteinerwald, the municipality features a mix of agricultural land and wooded areas. With an area of 28.26 square kilometers and a population of 2254 (as of January 1, 2026), Karlstetten combines rural charm with proximity to the city of St. Pölten.

Real building heights (OpenStreetMap footprints with heights from the BEV laser scan), sun hours and shadows from sun position and geometry. How much of it reaches you also depends on orientation and windows. Terrain is included, from the official elevation model out to 12 km: a mountain to the south takes the winter sun just as the house opposite does. Where the sun only grazes a ridge, the figure remains an approximation.
