History & character
From Royal Settlement to Industrial Bloom
Viehofen, a district of St. Pölten, is located on the western side of the Traisen and has a long history. Evidence of early settlement dates back to around 750 BC, and the area was likely part of an ancient royal settlement. The first written mention as Vihofen occurred in 1130, while the castle was first documented in 1170. In the early 19th century, Viehofen developed into one of the industrial centers of the region, particularly after the establishment of the lace and bobbin factory in 1867. The economic upswing after 1885, also driven by the railway and the regulation of the Traisen, led to the construction of the first church in 1898. On January 1, 1923, Viehofen was incorporated into the city of St. Pölten and is now a quiet district with a mix of historical and modern elements.
