Harland

History & character

From Agriculture to Worker Community

Harland is located in Lower Austria on the Traisen River and has been a district of St. Pölten since 1939. The name Harland refers to flax cultivation, while Altmannsdorf traces back to Bishop Altmann of Passau. The first records of Harland date back to the 13th century when the village was inhabited by 66 residents, mainly farmers. In the 19th century, Harland experienced growth with the opening of the Mathias Salcher & Sons spinning factory, leading to housing projects for incoming workers. The regulation of the Traisen after 1899 created additional jobs. With the establishment of the first school in 1883 and the complete provision of electricity and sewage in 1909, the infrastructure of the area developed further. From 1911, the St. Pölten tram operated in Harland, and by 1923, the population had reached 1,361. Today, Harland is a quiet district characterized by its public facilities, including a primary and elementary school as well as a kindergarten.

How much of it reaches you also depends on orientation and windows. Terrain is included, from the official elevation model out to 12 km: a mountain to the south takes the winter sun just as the house opposite does. Where the sun only grazes a ridge, the figure remains an approximation.
