History & character
From Roman Province to Market Town
Pyhra is a market town in the district of St. Pölten in Lower Austria, located in the hilly region of the Mostviertel. The area was part of the Roman province of Noricum in antiquity. The first documented mention occurred in 1058 when Heinrich IV. granted twenty hubs in Pirchehe (Pyhra) to the widow of Margrave Adalbert, Frowila. The name derives from the Middle High German word 'pirche' meaning 'birches'. The church was founded in 1083 by Bishop Altmann of Passau. The town faced historical challenges during the Turkish invasions, leading to destruction, and the church ruin of St. Cecilia was destroyed in 1805 during the French advance. Today, the market town covers an area of 66.77 square kilometers, with agricultural land and forests being prominent features of the landscape.
