History & character
From Pomerio to Baumgarten in Western Vienna
Baumgarten, first mentioned around the year 1195 under the name Pomerio, evolved from an agricultural area with arable land and vineyards in the north into a settled district. The original town center was located between Zehetnergasse and Pachmanngasse, while the settlement extended to Hochsatzengasse by the end of the 19th century. The Linzer Straße, a historic trunk road, ran through Baumgarten and played an important role in connecting to the surrounding areas. The municipality of Baumgarten was formed in 1850 from Oberbaumgarten and Unterbaumgarten, experiencing significant growth in housing until 1890. Today, Baumgarten is part of the 14th district of Penzing, characterized by a quiet suburban atmosphere that offers both recreational opportunities due to its proximity to the Wiental and good access to Vienna's city center.
