History & character
From Prantensee to a Lively District
Breitensee, located in the northeast of the 14th district of Penzing in Vienna, was first documented in 1195 as "Prantensee." The name may refer both to the word Pranten, meaning deforestation, and to a former pond called Angerteich, which existed until 1873. Originally an agricultural area, Breitensee later developed into a significant wine-growing region. Over time, the settlement suffered from the consequences of Turkish sieges and the plague. From 1892, Breitensee became part of Vienna and experienced improvements in accessibility with the integration into the urban transport network in the 20th century.
Today, Breitensee is a quiet, vibrant district characterized by a mix of residential areas and historic buildings. The neo-Gothic parish church of St. Laurentius and the old cinema "Breitenseer Lichtspiele" are notable landmarks. Additionally, there are numerous recreational opportunities that contribute to the character of the district, making it an attractive place to live for both young and old.
