Oberbaumgarten

History & character

From Agricultural Land to Residential Area

Oberbaumgarten, a part of the 14th district of Vienna, Penzing, has a long history dating back to 1195. At that time, the area was mentioned under the name Pomerio and was characterized by agricultural land and vineyards. The original village center was located between today's Zehetnergasse and Pachmanngasse. Over the centuries, the settlement expanded to the Hochsatzengasse. Oberbaumgarten was under the jurisdiction of the Benedictine monastery of Formbach until 1790 and experienced several significant events in the 17th and 18th centuries, including the plague epidemic and the destruction during the second Turkish siege of Vienna. The Linzer Straße, a historical main road, runs through the area and has played a central role since the Middle Ages.

Today, Oberbaumgarten presents itself as a quiet residential area, shaped by its geographical location on the northern bank of the Wien River. The surroundings offer a mix of residential neighborhoods and nature, with recreational areas in the adjacent hills of the Wiental providing a high leisure value. Oberbaumgarten thus combines history and modern living quality.
