Cottageviertel

History & character

From English Country House to Elegant District

The Cottageviertel in Vienna, spanning the municipal districts of Währing and Döbling, has its roots in the second half of the 19th century. In 1872, the Wiener Cottage Verein was founded, planning the construction of single- and two-family houses in an undeveloped area. The first villas, inspired by English country houses, were built under the direction of architect Carl von Borkowski. With Hermann Müller taking over, the buildings grew in size and elegance. The architecture of the district evolved from Gothic forms to French and Italian styles, complemented by Art Nouveau and Heimatstil elements around the turn of the century. A total of more than 350 houses were created, designed by renowned architects such as Franz von Neumann and Adolf Loos.

Today, the Cottageviertel is characterized by its upscale nature. It is known for its elegant villas and quiet residential atmosphere. Numerous prominent personalities have lived here, giving the district a unique cultural appeal. The combination of historic architecture and a green environment makes the Cottageviertel an attractive place to live in Vienna.
