History & character
From the Lumberjack Meadow to a Modern City
The name Stockerau likely derives from the combination of Stocker-Au, meaning the meadow of the lumberjacks. This historical connection to nature is still evident today in the Stockerauer Au, an important recreation area that has been under protection since 1994. The town has a long history dating back to the Neolithic period, with the first documented mention in 1012 in connection with Saint Koloman. Over the centuries, Stockerau evolved from a small market to a significant town, receiving city rights in 1893 and today being the largest town in the Weinviertel with over 17,000 residents. The connection to Vienna was further strengthened by the opening of the railway line in 1841 and the subsequent rapid transit connection in 1962.
Today, Stockerau presents itself as a vibrant city, blending historical heritage with modern living options. The town is characterized by a calm, family-friendly atmosphere, offering its residents both urban amenities and proximity to nature.
