History & character
From Agricultural Land to Residential Area
Unterbaumgarten, a part of the 14th district of Penzing in Vienna, has its roots in the year 1195 when the area was first mentioned as Pomerio. At that time, the region was primarily characterized by agricultural land and some vineyards. The town center originally stretched between today's Zehetnergasse and Pachmanngasse. Over the centuries, the settlement expanded westward. The Linzer Straße, which runs through the area, was known as Poststraße in the Middle Ages and served as an important transportation route. In 1850, Unterbaumgarten was merged into the municipality of Baumgarten and experienced significant growth in the late 19th century when the number of houses doubled.
Today, Unterbaumgarten is a quiet residential area that stands out for its proximity to the Wienfluss and surrounding recreational areas. Its geographical location in the southeastern part of the Penzing district offers a nature-oriented environment that is attractive to both families and commuters. The blend of historical influences and modern residential structures gives this neighborhood its unique character.
