History & character
From Manor to Vienna's Cadastre Community
Auhof is an area in the western part of Vienna, named after a manor documented since the Middle Ages at the northern edge of the Lainzer Tiergarten. The manor was first mentioned in 1194 and was under the feudal rule of the Johannites until the 16th century. Emperor Ferdinand I acquired the manor in 1560, which then served as the seat of the imperial forest master. After being used as a forest and hunting lodge until 1919, it came under the control of the war-damaged fund and was handed over to the City of Vienna by the federal government in 1938.
The cadastral community of Auhof was established in 1848 following the abolition of feudal rights and was formally recognized as part of the municipality of Hadersdorf-Weidlingau in 1851. In 1938, Auhof was incorporated into Vienna, with its boundaries changing several times over the years. Today, Auhof is a quiet residential area characterized by its proximity to the Lainzer Tiergarten and the associated recreational opportunities.
