History & character
From Neudörfl to Urban District
Unter-St.-Veit, a district of the 13th Viennese municipal district Hietzing, derives its name from St. Vitus, the patron saint of the parish church in Ober-St.-Veit. Until the mid-19th century, the area belonged to the municipality of St. Veit an der Wien. The first settlements began after the archbishop established building plots in 1803, while the historical center, known as "Neudörfl", was laid out along what is now Feldmühlgasse and Hietzinger Hauptstraße. The separation of Ober- and Unter-St.-Veit was completed in 1867, as the interests of the two places diverged. Unter-St.-Veit developed mainly through trade and crafts, in contrast to the agriculture-dominated neighboring municipality. After being incorporated into Vienna in 1890 and the establishment of the district office in 1892, the area underwent an urban transformation.
