History & character
From War Invalids to Residential Area
Friedensstadt, located in the 13th district of Vienna, Hietzing, has a remarkable history. Originally, the area was occupied by war invalids in the autumn of 1920, who successfully sought a settlement permit. The foundation stone was laid in 1921. The settlement, which spans approximately 45 hectares, features a mix of simple houses and spacious single-family homes. The name and street designation Friedenszeile reflect the time of its establishment. After being incorporated into Greater Vienna in 1938, the area was part of the Soviet occupation zone until 1955. Today, Friedensstadt is characterized by its high residential quality, as the Lainzer Tiergarten and Hörndlwald block through traffic. Public transport connections are good, and Hermesstraße provides direct access to the Lainzer Tor of the Tiergarten.
