History & character
From Village to Urban Community Lainz
Lainz is a district in the 13th district of Vienna, Hietzing, and was an independent suburb until 1891. The historical place developed from several farmsteads at the Lainzer Saddle and was connected to the neighboring villages of Unter-St.-Veit and Speising by the Lainzer Straße. Archaeological findings indicate that settlement occurred as early as the 12th century. The name Lainz first appeared in 1313. After a tumultuous history influenced by warfare and nobility, Lainz became an autonomous local community in 1848. The Gründerzeit led to a loss of the original village character as wealthy citizens built villas and modernized the infrastructure. In 1890, Lainz finally became part of the 13th district of Vienna and developed into a quiet yet urban residential area characterized by a blend of historical charm and modern amenities.
